Becoming The Well

To Become

When you think of the word “become”, if you’re anything like me you spiral down. You begin to notice the elements embedded within it. Two simple words: “Be” and “Come.”

“Be” speaks to existence and identity. It’s a starting state of who you are, where you are, and what currently exists in you.

“Come” simply implies movement towards something else. It carries direction, invitation and intention.

So to become is simply to move from where you are toward something else. And if you spiral down with me a little further , a standard english dictionary would tell you that to become is to begin to be, to grow into, or to develop into. Embedded in that language is time, formation, and gradual change. In other words, becoming implies progression over time.

The Greek philosopher Aristotle tried to answer the deep question about how things change without losing their identity. His answer was: everything that changes moves from potentiality to actuality. So here, to become is simply to actualize what already exists in potential (take a moment here, and feel free to spiral down with this one before you proceed).

Throughout Scripture, we see the concept of becoming as Transformation by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2), we also see it as being transformed into the same image of Christ from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). I don’t reckon that simply modifying behaviors will accomplish this. So if we spiral down here, embedded in the two verses highlighted is the reshaping of a persons identity.

We also see becoming as Sanctification , being set apart overtime. “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being Sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14). Just incase you missed it, that entire verse is present continuous. One might try to argue and say, we are already sanctified, and I wouldn’t shut that argument down, not even slightly. That argument is right. We were already washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11) . Two truths that exist together.

The Well

A well is simply a man-made hole dug into the ground to access underground water for sustenance. At this point, you know the drill so spiral down with me. For a well to essentially become a well, digging has to take place. It has to go beneath the surface until it taps into a hidden source. So, we can then redefine the well as a deep place, connected to a source that provides ongoing, life-giving supply through intentional digging and continual drawing.

A well isn’t designed to create water, it simply reveals it. And the capacity of the well is solely dependent on how deep it is willing to go.

Becoming The Well

This is the foundation of what this journal is about , our digging is a journey. What I once thought was a destination, I quickly learned is an ongoing journey. So what is becoming a well?

Simply put, it is the journey of going beneath the surface. And as simple as that sounds my friend, it isn’t.

Becoming a well is the process of allowing God to dig past what is seen, past behavior, past performance , and even past what you so well manage. Allowing Him into the deeper places of your heart you’ve probably forgotten, or never knew existed. The Well is not just where we acknowledge identity. The Well is the place we form identity.

The Well is where what exists in potential is brought into reality, not by force, but through surrender and formation over time.

To become the well is to be shaped into a life that is not sustained by external conditions, but by an internal connection to the source.

So if you’ll spiral down with me one last time… this means that the process to become a well cannot be rushed, because depth cannot be manufactured, it can only be formed. That formation looks like being stretched, emptied, confronted, and refined. Not for destruction, but for capacity.

Why? Because the depth of the well determines the sustainability of what it carries.

The truth is, many of us have tried to live as wells without ever allowing ourselves to be dug. We’ve tried to pour without ever being filled. We try to give without being sustained, and we try to produce without being connected.

But a true Well does not strive to produce water, it simply yields to the source beneath it.

The Invitation

If you made it this far, I want to personally invite you on a journey with me.

Not to become something impressive, but to simply become something deep. Not to strive for output, but to actually remain connected to what sustains life.

This is where Scripture reframes it all; In John 4, Jesus speaks of a water that doesn’t just satisfy temporarily, but becomes within the one who believes and receives, “a spring welling up to eternal life.”

In Jeremiah 2, God contrasts Himself as the fountain of living waters with broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

The journey to become a well is to be dug deep enough that what flows from your life is no longer limited by you, but sustained by the source you are rooted in.

You carry a well within you that is possibly latent . It’s present, just not yet flowing.

If you accept the invite, sign up and let’s journey together and begin to flow.
