What If the Emptiness Is The Point?

Nobody tells you that the process of becoming a well begins with a hole.

Not a breakthrough. Not a blessing. Not a mountaintop moment. Just a hole. Dark. Unfinished. Dirty on all sides.

We spend so much of our spiritual lives trying to avoid that feeling. The hollowness. The season where it seems like nothing is flowing, nothing is producing, nothing is working. We pray against it. We push through it. We perform our way around it.

But what if the emptiness isn’t a sign that something is wrong? What if the digging is the point?

The Well Doesn’t Start Full

A well is a man-made hole dug into the ground, not to create water, but to reach it. The water was always there, hidden beneath the surface. The digging was never meant to be punishment, it’s preparation.

And here’s the part we do not talk about enough: before a well can give anything, it has to be made hollow.

That hollowness you’ve been trying to escape? God may be forming your capacity inside of it.

In Jeremiah 2, God grieves over a people who abandoned Him — the fountain of living waters — and dug their own cisterns instead. Cracked ones. Ones that couldn’t hold anything. The problem wasn’t that the people were thirsty. The problem was that they kept trying to manage their own water supply.

We do the EXACT same! We maintain, We perform and we we’re always running dry.

Depth Can’t be Manufactured

Scripture doesn’t describe transformation as an upgrade, it describes it as a process. We are being transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). We are being changed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). We are being sanctified — present continuous, ongoing.

The Greek philosopher Aristotle said everything that changes moves from potentiality to actuality. From what could be, to what is. In other words, what God is forming in you already exists. It just hasn’t been excavated yet.

Depth cannot be manufactured. It can only be formed. And that formation is slow, it’s stretching, and sometimes feels a lot like emptiness.

Remember: The depth of the well determines the sustainability of what it carries.

A shallow well can hold water, but not under pressure. Not in drought. Not when a demand is great. But a well that has been dug deep? It doesn’t depend on surface conditions because it is connected to something hidden, constant, and unaffected by what’s happening above.

So, what do you carry? And is your depth strong enough to sustain it?

• What if the dry season you’re in isn’t a detour, but the digging?

• Where have you been managing your own water supply instead of connect to the source?

• What would it mean to stop striving and simply yield today?

Prayer

Dear Abba, I have been frightened of the hollow places. I’ve rushed past them, performed around them, and even filled them with noise. Today I give you permission to dig. Dig past the surface. Past the managed. Past the version of me I present to the world. Form in me a depth that only You can fill, Abba. And let what flows from my life be sustained by you alone. Amen
